Well, Chris Taylor (sharpeningiron.wordpress.com) called me out in the comments section of “Re: Christians vs. Atheists” after I said the old testament god was , quote, “an asshole.”
Anyway, he wanted me to back up my claim that god is, in fact, an asshole.
Well, where to begin?
I think I’ll just list a few thing off the top of the dome, since I don’t feel like doing research…
God drowned everyone, including children and sinless animals, when he could have used his infinite knowledge to predetermine that they would turn out bad and just not make them or he could have magically “poofed” away all the bad people.
God banished Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden, although his infinite knowledge should have allowed him to know that Satan was in the garden and that Adam and Eve would sin. Set ‘em up and knock em down! Why not just banish Satan before the harm is done?
God kills livestock, crops, fish, and children in Egypt so that Pharoah will release his slaves. What, was an all-powerful God incapable of just appearing to Pharoah and saying “I am the Lord your God, let my people go,” effectively converting the Pharoah (and Egypt) as well as releasing the slaves without any pain or suffering? God even tells Moses that He has hardened Pharoah’s heart so that Pharoah will not listen, making it seem as if God is just torturing Egypt for the sheer hell of it.
After drowning Egypt’s entire army for trying to save their country from sure ruin, God gives Moses sexist, useless commandments before having Moses kill thousands of the Jews God killed Egyptians to save. God then sends a plague among the Jews and kills Moses before he can reach the promised land. Torture? Yes. Hell fucking yes.
Yes, God is, indeed an asshole.
If Chris manages to refute all of these stories and make God’s asshole-ness into virtue, then I’ll list some more examples. But I think this is good for now.

ok first off. i had bad experiances with most christians, the problem is not only god its also with his people(arrogance/naive). in the bible most of gods followers fail their tasks. like where to begin ah yes jesus was abandoned by all his Disciples and then gets burned on a cross. i did historical research that most crucifixions where done by burning. god also created lucifer, and jesus was dragged down by Lucifer. how so you ask, well at the time jesus was around being the son of god was i quote “up for grabs”. just ask yourself because i know you all have that feeling. 1. are you really following out of fear 2. are my believes legitimate.

Not long after this was originally posted, my only child, at age 12, was diagnosed with a life-altering disease. He will suffer pain, horrible disabilities, and an early death. Standing over his unconscious body in the pediatric ICU, I knew there was no god. I am so sorry to hear about your child. It is such a tragedy to experience the kind of pain like you and your child must be going through. It is so hard to make sense of why fate would conspire to bring such pain on any of us. It is especially difficult to understand why any loving powerful sentient entity would allow something like this to happen. There are some things we can only hope to understand and make peace with before we die. I have occasionally found it useful to tell God right from my soul what a rat bastard He is for hurting me so badly… He can take it. He’s plenty strong And loving of us and can take more abuse than you ever gave your earthly father. I just hope you can make peace with (God/ the universe/ fate/ life) so that you can focus less on your own pain and more on showing your child what a blessing s/he is to your life in the short time remaining – all we all have a short time remaining in the big scheme of things.

I am a little ashamed to admit that I found your page by searching Google for “God is an asshole”.
I am a Christian, and God recently dealt me a disappointment in my life. My disappointment is nothing compared to the ones that Karly and a few others mention. My point is that even Christians sometimes doubt the wisdom, power, or goodness of God, even when the disappointment is not particularly severe.
The Bible teaches that God is all three of these things, and it is very difficult to believe this at times. It would be so convenient if I could could just pick two of the three. Then, most of life could be explained by the doctrine of “shit happens”.
I also wanted to address the point of human free will and God’s sovereignty and knowledge. The author (I’ll call you Chill, if you don’t mind) says that God could have “poofed” the bad people out of existence instead of flooding the earth. That is certainly true. I don’t know why he chose to flood the earth rather than using some other means of judgment. He also could have forseen that Adam and Eve would sin and kept the tempter out of the garden. I don’t know exactly why he chose to allow Adam and Eve to sin. Also, keep in mind that even if God knew in advance that Adam and Eve would sin, this does not diminish their responsibility for doing so.
The short answer to your objections about God is that God does everything for his own glory. Also, the Bible teaches that “all things work together” for the good of those who believe in Christ, that is, Christians. (As far as I know, the Bible makes no promise like this to unbelievers.)
Please do not misunderstand. I am not saying these things flippantly. I am bothered by the injustices and pains of this world also. It is very difficult to believe that God is all-wise, all-knowing, and all-powerful. It is also difficult for me to believe that the seemingly-senseless things that happens to me (large and small) are for my good.

Well, I found this site searching for “God is an asshole”, too. I have spent my life searching for and believing in a divine power. Raised by a fundamentalist fanatic family who used religion as an excuse to abuse their children….I could never believe their version of the BIG PUNISHER IN THE SKY. Even though they told me God would get tired of dealing with me someday and just kill me & send me to Hell for eternity, I still said, “If that is what God is, then I CHOOSE to burn in Hell rather than serve something so hatefull, so petty, so undeserving of my respect, much less my worship!”
That was 32 years ago. Since then, I have searched for a God that actually LOVES us and proves it by his actions. We, as people, are held responsible for our actions and the results that come from them. We are also expected to stand by our word. So why should the ‘Supreme Being’ have less expected of him? He gets to get away with anything because he’s in charge? Wow, sounds like our government and all organized religious dogma to me.
I am almost 50 years old now, and I am an ordained minister with one religion, an initiated priestess with another, a student with another, a master of yet another!…and I have come to the ultimate conclusion that GOD IS AN ASSHOLE! Those of us who have tried to love, serve, know or trust him are his favorite torture subjects, because his betrayal hurts us so much more than those who never even tried to believe.

I’d like to also add that god loves to torture, dissappoint, terrorize, confuse, humiliate, sicken, weaken, impoverish those who are pure of heart. I no longer continue to love, serve, or trust him. If, on any Sunday morning in America, you were to visit a Sunday school class full of small children, there are two things that are nearly guaranteed. On the wall there will be a picture or poster of Jesus with a group of children around him. And the class will end up singing the song “Jesus loves the little children.” Christians are quite fond of both the imagery and the music.
The question that we should ask is a simple one. If Jesus is all-powerful, all-knowing and all-loving, and if Jesus loves the little children, then why do so many children live in abject poverty? A paper entitled “Chronic poverty in India” describes the poverty faced by the world’s children in this way:
Poverty has been described as a situation of “pronounced deprivation in well being” and being poor as “to be hungry, to lack shelter and clothing, to be sick and not cared for, to be illiterate and not schooled…Poor people are particularly vulnerable to adverse events outside their control. They are often treated badly by institutions of the state and society and excluded from voice and power in those institutions.” Using income as a measure of poverty, the World Development Report refers to the “deep poverty amid plenty” in the world and states that a fifth of the world’s people live on less than $1 a day, and 44% of them are in South Asia. [ref]
Even in the United States — one of the wealthiest nations on earth — poverty is a major problem. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, more than 26 million children in the United States participate in the National School Lunch Program, which provides low-cost or free lunches to children at or near the poverty level. [ref] 26 million children represents about half of all the children in the United States.
One thing that you quickly realize, if you allow yourself to think about it, is that the number of people living in abject poverty on this planet is staggering. A “fifth of the world’s people” is more than a billion people. You also realize that $1 a day means that these people are living in hopeless, wretched conditions. Think about how little food you can buy for $1. Now consider the fact that the $1 is spent on that little bit of food, so there is no money left for housing, clean water, restroom facilities, clothing, shoes, health care, education, infrastructure, etc. etc. Disease runs rampant. Starvation is common. This level of poverty is nearly unimaginable to most people in the United States, yet more than a billion people live this way today.
Now consider the fact that, if you raise the bar to $3 a day — still an extremely meager amount — half of the people on the planet are living at that level of poverty. More than three billion people. As discussed in Chapter 5, 10 million children die every year as a result of abject poverty.
Where in the world is Jesus?
Here is what Jesus has to say about poverty in the Bible. If you look in Matthew chapter 6:25, you will find this amazing quote:
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.”
If “your heavenly Father knows that you need them all,” then what in the world has gone wrong? When Jesus says, “Do not be anxious,” what could he possibly mean? If you are living on $1 a day, you are going to be anxious about everything including food, clean drinking water, clothing, basic medical care, sanitation facilities and education. More than a billion people are living like that today.
How many people is a billion? Take all 300 or so million people in the United States. That is a lot of people. Quadruple that number. That is how many people are living in abject, wretched, unimaginable poverty around the world. If Jesus loves all the little children of the world, he has a truly bizarre way to show his love.
What any normal person realizes, when looking at the facts that are plainly visible in our world, is that what Jesus said in the Bible is completely wrong. Jesus’ statements about poverty in Matthew 6:25-32 are clearly false. God is not looking out for these people. God is not feeding them, nor is he clothing them like lilies. Jesus hates quite a few of the little children of the world, and he demonstrates his hatred by imprisoning them in abject poverty.
Jesus is completely wrong
This is not the first example that we have seen in the Bible where Jesus is completely wrong. In section 1 of this book, we saw that Jesus is clearly wrong when he talks about the power of prayer. Jesus says in Matthew 21:21:
I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
That is obviously false. Section 1 demonstrated dozens of examples that prove this statement to be incorrect. See in particular Chapter 7.
This statement is also false in John chapter 14:12:
Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son; if you ask anything in my name, I will do it.
If this were true, we would have completely eradicated all diseases and eliminated all poverty centuries ago.
This statement in Mark 16:15 is provably false:
And [Jesus] said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
If this were true, we would not need doctors, hospitals or pharmaceutical companies. You would not need health insurance. The two billion Christian believers on planet earth today could take care of all of our medical needs for free by simply laying their hands on us.
This passage from Matthew 15:21-28 is quite bizarre:
Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.” Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.” “Yes, Lord,” she said, “but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
The thing you notice is the incredible racism. Jesus equates the woman to a dog because she is not an Israelite. Would God do that? Imagine a world leader today equating someone to a dog because she is not of the correct nationality or religion. The negative reaction would be overwhelming.
What you realize is that, if you go through the Bible and actually read what Jesus says, he is completely wrong in quite a number of cases. The question you must ask yourself is this: If Jesus is God, why is he not perfect?
Here is the thing that I would like to help you understand: The reason why Jesus was incorrect in so many places is easy to understand. Jesus was not God. Jesus was a normal human being who was way, way out on a limb.

If this God exists, and if he/she rejoices in automatically condemning to hell anyone who dies without first becoming a Christian, then that God is both a monster and insane. In the same token, if that God is apparently willing to forgive a murderer who begs for forgiveness on his deathbed, but is quite happy to send to hell a non-religious loving, caring atheist family who die together in a car accident, that same God should be shot down.

Today I am not the happiest camper at the campsite in this holy dictator’s universe; yet, it doesn’t come to any surprise to me that I, along with many children have said awful things to their parents, and so oft’ times to God. Many people, Christians, tout that this God loves us and has a wonderful plan for our lives; however, this wonderful plan is a one-way adventure namely from God’s perspective. Ours’ is to be his ‘dulos’ from the Greek meaning ‘slave’. Slaves have no rights endowed to them by their Creator as stated in the American Constitution. It’s a wonderful plan so long as God gets his way at tormenting our lives since He alone calls us sinful and we deserve nothing from Him save only judgement as He claims. It is hard to love, fall in love, maintain a loving relationship, or make love to someone who is judging you as a low-life worthless creature deserving only of wrath; although we are to be so bloody grateful that we get a cookie to dip into our tea from time to time. I did not ask to be birthed to the British white parents I have. Yes, to be more precise I did not ask to be created at all. Of course, these are not the real issues, are they? To be fair to God, as I also would like the same respect, is if this were my universe and I created all that is seen; then I would likewise demand allegiance from my creation. Think of this. If I cooked a fabulous meal should I not expect to partake of it when, if, and how much of it I so desired? I have two very large Doberman Pinchers weighing 10 stone each. Yeah very hugely bred. Conclusion: When all is proclaimed of our accusations against Him He does seem to increase in intelligence much like my parents do as we grow up into adulthood; so it must be with God as we slowly realise that we, as mere mortals, cannot so much as create a gnat from nothing; yet, we have all there is to behold of this Great God and Saviour.
